It is said when he built temples, he broke several norms, ie regardless of dialect groups, location or Taoism/Popular religion etc, like donation to a Fook Tet Soo Khet temple despite being a Hokkien
and also Geok Ong temple

Notes:
The money of $400,000 lent to his friends would amount to $40 million in today equivalent
(Pioneers of Singapore by Chiu Sin Min). It is said he is benevolent to the poor, and after building Hong Lim Market,
he did not press for the rental and will release the debt if the debtor really cannot pay.
