There is pressure world-wide concerning how societies, and nation states more specifically, manage their dead. On the one hand, there is the practical consideration of body disposal at the time of death. On the other, there are social and cultural considerations that link to beliefs and identities and which are important for social stability and cultural sustainability within and across communities.
